Antique Radio Repair & Restoration Estimates & Guarantee

Vintage adding machine pictureEstimates – We charge a flat labor rate for antique radio restorations of $20 per tube (i.e. labor for a 5-tube radio is $100).  We also charge a 7% labor surcharge to cover the cost of small parts (nuts, bolts, springs, solder, wire, dial string, etc.).  The $20 per tube labor charge includes cleaning the radio chassis and cabinet, tube testing, cleaning and lubrication of switches and controls, minor speaker repair, and precise alignment of tuned circuits to ensure maximum selectivity and sensitivity.

If your antique radio repair or restoration requires other parts such as a power cord, power or output transformer, tubes, new speaker cone, coils, dial string, etc, you pay only the cost of the part.  We do not normally charge additional labor, but there can be exceptions. Two common exceptions are for rebuilding Philco bakelite block capacitors and radios requiring replacement of 50% or more of the wiring.  Most early 1940s Philco, RCA and Zenith radios used wire with rubber insulation that dries out and crumbles over the years. Additional labor would apply for these radios.  We will identify any additional labor cost in our estimate.

External Audio Connection – Most radios can accommodate addition of a 3.5 mm jack and a switch to enable connecting an audio source such as an MP3 or CD player, or FM radio output. A Bluetooth receiver can also be connected to the 3.5 mm jack to allow streaming audio content to your radio. The cost for adding an audio connection is $25.

Cabinet Refinishing – We will have to look at the cabinet and discuss with you the level of restoration you want before providing an estimate.  A simple refinish that does not require stripping generally runs less than $100.00

Deposits We don’t like requiring deposits, however, an increase in problems with receiving payments forces us to require a 50% payment of the estimated labor at the time we receive your radio.

Guarantee –We bench test all our antique radio repair and restorations with two full days of playing.  We also examine every stage of the radio with an oscilloscope to ensure all components are operating properly and at peak performance. We guarantee all new or new old stock parts for 1 year, used parts for 90 days. We guarantee our labor, and your enjoyment, forever.
